Alexa Shockley, News Writer EMORY, Va.– Emory & Henry’s men’s basketball team traveled to Ferrum College on Tuesday, Feb. 25, for the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament and were defeated with a score of 87-84. The game was close with a score of 45-40 Ferrum in the first half and a score of 44-42 E&H in the second half, according to GoWasps. Ferrum entered the tournament's first game 7th-seeded, while Emory & Henry entered 10th-seeded. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ben Thompson said E&H’s team entered feeling “pretty good, cause we’ve been playing well the last two or three weeks of the season." Thompson commented on the game’s tensions, saying, “There were probably a couple of officiating calls that could have gone either way and went against us that hurt. For the most part, we got what we wanted and just didn’t make the shots.” Thompson continued, “So late in the games like that details are so minute, so any kind of miscalculation or somebody not being on the right page can throw it off.” According to GoWasps, Ferrum achieved a 15-5 lead four minutes into the game, but the Wasps closed the gap to 35-34 with 3:14 left in the half. The Panthers took a 45-40 advantage before halftime. Emory & Henry started the second period by tying the score at 50 and then proceeded to take the lead twice in the second half, but Ferrum ultimately came out on top. GoWasps states that after hitting his 1,000-point plateau in the previous game, senior Colin Molden had 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals in his final game as a Wasp. Freshman forward Dylon Catron had 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore guard Micah Banks had 15 points and three boards. Sophomore guard Anthony Williams topped the scores with 25 points. Williams also had six rebounds and two steals. Despite the loss, Thompson summed up the season as having “some highs and some lows.” He shared his pride in the team in saying, “We battled a ton of adversity with a lot of stuff that happened to our guys early and over the summer. The guys could have packed [up] and quit, but they didn’t. They kept fighting, they kept battling.” Thompson continued, “I was really pleased with their effort and how they fought to finish the season. We had higher aspirations. We didn’t quite get to what we wanted, but it’s a good foundation to build for the future.” Thompson elaborated on some of the team's accomplishments for the season. “Qualifying for the [ODAC] tournament is big. When we beat Virginia Wesleyan here, they were the 13th ranked team in the country, so that was a big time win for us. I think it’s the highest ranked win over the last five or 10 years as far as who the opponent was and as far as their ranking.” Though Thompson and the team will not return to basketball practice until October 2020, the 2020 All-ODAC teams have been released and include one of the E&H players. Senior guard Colin Molden earned a place on the 2020 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Second Team.
