Madison Brown, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Emory Activities Board held a Spring Formal on March 8, 2020, which was the first formal held since the early 2000s. The formal’s theme was the “Roaring 20’s” and was held at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon. President of EAB Parker Kitts said, “We were petitioned to have a formal again. It was something that previous EAB administration weren’t very fond of, just because of the lack of attendance. Once we were petitioned, we pulled out the idea for a formal.”

Alexa Shockley, News Writer On Wednesday, March 11, Emory & Henry Student Government Association met to discuss the college’s plans concerning COVID-19 and the college’s Office of Violence Against Women grant. The SGA senators also participated in a focus-group study for campus diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Alexa Shockley, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Emory & Henry hosted its first International & Multicultural Night on Thursday, March 12 in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. Several tables representing different countries and cultures were set up in the MCA lobby at 6:30 p.m. for the cultural fair. The E&H website describes this event as a “festive country fair to provide information about a variety of countries and cultures.
Allison Hamilton, News Editor EMORY, Va. — “Effective March 9th, 2020, Emory & Henry College is canceling international programming such as spring break programs, internships, and field-based research. Further, effective March 9th, 2020, Emory & Henry College is placing an indefinite moratorium on all international travel and any unplanned domestic travel.” The previous quote was written in an email sent out to E&H students on March 9 from the college’s administration, after the college had been monitoring the COVID-19 situation abroad since the previous week.
Cathryn Sweigart, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — In conjunction with March being Women’s History Month, numerous women at Emory & Henry College have recently made—and continue to make—significant impacts within the college community. One woman involved in E&H athletics is Joy Scruggs, who was recently recognized by Emory & Henry for her 39-year-long career at the college. Scruggs is a former coach for the E&H women’s basketball team, and has been teaching health and human performance throughout her career.
Trey Brown, Guest Contributor HAYTERS GAP, Va. — On Sunday, March 1, members of Greek life participated in a collective cleanup of a waterfall in Hayter’s Gap. The cleanup came as a result of a complaint made by a member of the Hayter’s Gap community via a Facebook post on Aug. 5, 2019, that featured several elicit photographs of spray-painted, Greek-lettered “tags” on the rocks at the waterfall.
Ryleigh Clukey, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Last Thursday, Feb. 27, the van Vlissingen Center for Career and Professional Development hosted their first Super Senior Sessions, a time for senior students at Emory & Henry to learn more about job searches, resumes and networking. The idea was first brought before Amanda Gardner, Director of Career Services, by a group of Resident Advisors who wanted to start a program for seniors to help prepare them for life after college. They asked Gardner to help them to coordinate the event.
Jacob Cordle, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Emory & Henry College presented events to celebrate this year’s Black History Month, which took place in February. The events were arranged by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. On Feb. 21, Men of Excellence, which is an organization that provides support for Emory & Henry’s men of color, hosted an NBA2k20 Tournament in the Martin-Brock Student Center.
Henry Quesenberry, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. -- On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Joshua Stamper, in his fourth year of being vice principal at Virginia Middle School, spoke during the “Ugly Me: Childhood Trauma in Public Education” Lyceum in the Board of Visitors (BOV) lounge at Emory & Henry College. Stamper, who is also the author of “Ugly Me,” spoke to the students and teachers in attendance about the importance of showing children in the public school system the love and support they deserve because they may not get it at home.
