Ryleigh Clukey, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Colt Pierce, an Emory & Henry senior majoring in geography and history, has been accepted into the doctoral program of social geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He applied to six different universities and was accepted into his top-pick school.

Madison Brown, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — Plans are being discussed at Emory & Henry College in regards to starting a Greek Housing program next semester. Each Greek chapter will get their own townhouse at the Village, which fits up to six people. Sam Amos, Greek Life Specialist at Emory & Henry, sees that this new housing plan could be beneficial for the college. “Greek Life housing would be an opportunity to build a positive relationship with the community and campus. Additionally, the campus could use this as a recruiting tool for students interested in fraternity and sorority life.”
Ryleigh Clukey, News Writer EMORY, Va. — On Monday, Feb. 10 at 7:29 a.m., Scott Williams, Director of Facilities Planning and Management Facilities, and Ryan Bowyer, Associate Provost and Dean of Students, were alerted that there were power outages across campus. Power was restored a few hours later, in the late morning. Bowyer said, “I do not believe that activities were impacted, but there were classes that were altered or had to be adjusted due to power.”
Cam Derr, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — The Marsh Regional Blood Center held a blood drive on the campus of Emory & Henry College on Monday, Feb. 10. The Bloodmobile was parked outside of the Van Dyke Center from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. collecting blood donations from students.
Together, E&H and Algoma Students Compared Cultures and Experiences Cara Brooks & Bethany Lockhart, Sports Editor and Managing Editor EMORY, Va. — On Sunday, Feb. 16, Emory & Henry College students gathered for a Lyceum presented by students and faculty of Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The students and faculty from the university spoke at the Lyceum about their rich culture and how their school has a special mission dealing with the healing and reconciliation of the country’s history of discrimination against the Indigenous Canadians.
Jacob Cordle, News Writer EMORY, Va. — A group of Emory & Henry students held a demonstration outside of Wiley Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 12 to protest the elimination of the Head of Acting position in the theatre department. Theatre students received news Tuesday night that Assistant Professor of Acting Rachael Swartz would not be returning for the next academic year.
Ryleigh Clukey, News Writer EMORY, Va. — Last Saturday, Feb. 8, Emory & Henry College hosted its first winter guard competition in the King Center gym. Sixteen winter guards and one indoor percussion group came to compete, including Emory & Henry’s own winter guard, with their show titled “In a World of Thorns.”
Trey Brown, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. – On Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, residents of Hickory Hall at Emory & Henry College were alerted via email from the Office of Housing & Residence Life there was a water leak near one of the mechanical rooms in the building. As a result, the water was temporarily shut off to the entire residential hall. Students were advised to curtail all water usage in other buildings, including Martin Brock Student Center and the King Center.
Madison Codispoti, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — This past summer, 16 Emory & Henry Students visited Cuba and documented their experience, with each student being responsible for capturing video. The videos were compiled together, and the final product was put together by senior mass communications major Allison Hamilton as her senior project. It was presented for Lyceum credit on Thursday, Feb. 8 and was attended by many Emory & Henry Students.
Alexa Shockley, News Writer EMORY, Va. — On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Emory & Henry Student Government Association (SGA) met to discuss fund allocation to the Calliopean Literary Society, a student organization that has existed on campus since 1840, and the debate surrounding the laying off of theater department professor Rachael Swartz. Senator Joseph Johnson began the meeting by asking the senate to consider adding a discussion of Professor Swartz to the agenda. Theater professor Rachel Swartz was recently laid off due to budget cuts, and students have been protesting this action on her behalf. The senate agreed to discuss the situation.
