Mason Carroll, Guest Contributor SALEM, Va. — This weekend, both the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams traveled to Salem, VA to Roanoke College for this year’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships. This year's contest would conclude the college’s second year of participation in the sport of track and field. The competition resulted in the men’s team taking seventh place, and in achieving this placement, they broke four different school records. Along with the men, two women who competed this weekend for Emory & Henry broke records as well. For the men’s team, there were notable standout performances from multiple individuals ending competition on Sunday. According to GoWasps, Donovan Pinnix, a native of Eden, NC and a sophomore at Emory & Henry, claimed the title in shot put, throwing 14.35 meters to take first. Not far behind came senior Justin Fannon, coming in fourth place with a throw of 13.71 meters. Sophomores Edward Rajner and Brody Fields also had notable performances, claiming 12th and 18th place respectively. According to GoWasps, juniors Jackson Kaze and Conor White had standout performances on the track. White finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.27. “For having such a small team, we placed very well,” said White. “We are by far the smallest team that was at the meet and all of our runners and throwers are already competing and beating those of bigger schools. This tournament was the highest the team has ever placed, and it is a great stepping stone to the next level.” Kaze, not far behind, went home with the eighth place spot with a time of 4:35.01. However, these were not the only events Kaze and White were involved in. They teamed up with Jaylyn Kreimes, a sophomore who placed 12th in the 200 meters, and freshman Colby Martin in the 4x400 meter relay. This event resulted in the Emory & Henry men’s team taking home sixth place. In a change of events, junior Markell Moss, a Wytheville, VA native, took 14th in both the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 0:09.19 as well as the long jump with a distance of 5.76 meters. Moss would go on to claim 13th in the triple jump at 12.24 meters. As for the women of Emory & Henry, they too had strong finishes over the weekend. Sophomore Lorin Zehr participated in the weight throw, throwing 12.29 meters which was good enough for ninth place. As for shot put, which she also participated in, Zehr snagged 14th in that event with a toss of 9.46 meters. On the track, an Emory & Henry sophomore, Yasmin Thorpe, added her name to the Emory & Henry record books in the 200 meters with a time of 0:29.54. Despite all the individual success across the board for both the Emory & Henry Men’s and Women’s teams, ultimately Washington and Lee University were the champions of the men’s teams, repeating their success from last year. As for the women, the ladies of the University of Lynchburg successfully defended their title from competition last season as well. The weekend-long event concluded the seasons of both men’s and women’s teams across the ODAC for indoor track and field. Emory & Henry indoor track and field returns in the Spring of 2021, with the help and guidance of Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Shawnee Kegley, Assistant Cross Country & Track Coach Nathan Magstadt, and Assistant Track & Field and Strength & Conditioning Coach Mike Caro, in hopes of bettering this season’s performance and claiming first place in the ODAC Championships next season.
