Henry Quesenberry, Sports Writer MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The 2020 Emory & Henry Baseball Team travelled down to Mount Berry, GA to open up their season. According to the ODAC’s website, the Wasps have been picked to finish twelfth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) for the season. Even though the team has been picked to finish twelfth, players are optimistic. Junior Noah Griffin said, “We have the pieces to have a good season.”

Emily Bunn, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — Emory & Henry men’s basketball team continued their season with a home game against the Washington and Lee Generals on Wednesday, Jan. 29 and an away game against the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Feb. 1. During the Wednesday night match-up at Bob Johnson Court against the Generals, the Wasps came up short by 13 points. The Washington and Lee men’s basketball team ended the first half with a 12 point lead on the Wasps.
Rebecca Pagnini, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. – This past weekend on Saturday, Feb. 1, the Intermont Equestrian Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team ventured to the Townley Equestrian Center to compete at their first show of the spring semester, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. E&H team members earned multiple top awards during the day. In Intermediate over fences, senior Emily Trice placed third, while sophomore Madelyn Lowe took home first place. For Intermediate flat, sophomore Remy Tate earned fourth and senior Gwenyth Stromhdahl won the class with a first place finish.
Cam Derr, Sports Writer EMORY, Va. -- The Emory & Henry cheer and dance team has a whole new look for their 2019–2020 season. Head coach Sara Hansen was hired in August, new uniforms have been sported at football and basketball games and the team has grown substantially in the last few years. So what does that mean for this season? The cheer and dance teams can be seen on the sidelines in the fall and winter seasons cheering for E&H athletics and pepping up the crowds. Their spring season usually involves some form of competition but this year junior Hope Williams said, “We were going to attend a competition, [but] we don’t feel as if we are ready.”
Luke Montalbano, Sports Writer EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry women’s basketball team returned to the Bob Johnson Court on Saturday to host conference rival Randolph-Macon College. The score was close throughout a majority of the game; however, the Wasps would use a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to help win the game by a final score of 72-67.
Luke Montalbano, Sports Writer EMORY, Va. — The first few weeks of spring semester can mean only one thing: it is time for baseball season. The Emory & Henry baseball team has begun practice for the spring 2020 season. This year’s team will feature seven seniors, 14 juniors, 13 sophomores and 12 freshmen. According to GoWasps, the team last season recorded 148 runs, 332 hits, 62 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, and batted .265 as a team. On the mound, the Wasps had a team earned run average (ERA) of 7.74, one shutout and had a batting against average of .341.
Cathryn Sweigart, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — The Emory & Henry men’s and women’s swim team hosted their last split dual meet against Hampden Sydney College and Sweet Briar College this past Saturday, January 25. The women's team beat out Sweet Briar 124-51 while the men’s team fell short to Hampden Sydney, 113-80. The team’s head coach, Cody Skinner, said he was “very happy with how we raced,” and thought the team “competed pretty strong for where we’re at physically.”
Becca Pagnini, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — Daniella Lima is a sophomore dual athlete at Emory & Henry College, where she is a part of both the Cheer & Dance team and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Equestrian Team. Lima transferred from Forsyth Technical Community College in the fall, making this her first year at E&H.
Carson Blom, Guest Contributor EMORY, Va. — The women’s basketball team is speeding through the end of their regular season with two more wins this week against Guilford College on Wednesday, January 22 and Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 25. In both games, the team was able to beat their opponents by double digits, and Emory & Henry women’s basketball now currently holds a 15-3 record.
Chris Desalvo, Sports Writer EMORY, Va.- The Emory & Henry Women’s basketball team are in the midst of defending their home court in a 4-game home contest streak. On Friday, the Wasps played their third of these games against the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels. This game was the first of the Comfort Suites Classic which lasted over the weekend. The Stormy Petrels are ranked No. 19th in NCAA Division III by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, but the Wasps executed to a tee.
