Matthew Krauss, News Writer Junior Landie Maness eagerly anticipates her new position as President of the Student Government Organization (SGA). Despite her nomination and confirmation initially contested, she believes because of the vacancy of the position it is her “duty to take over the role of president.” She is grateful to work with a hardworking SGA administration who is dedicated despite initial road blocks because, “We all have a job to do,” says Maness. However, Maness does feel the strain from her new duties as she admits it’s challenging to “balance time between all the different groups I am involved with.” In part this has risen from the fact that as president she now has more responsibilities to address and to cope she explains, “this is a day-by-day thing.” Currently she has not formally began promoting or encouraging any of her own new legislation. Maness is aware the student body suffers from lacking privyness to the SGA decision process. She, with help from Dean Ryan Bowyer, plans to create and distribute surveys for students to voice their opinions. This outreach also includes better utilization of SGA’s social media platforms. She wants to utilize Instagram’s feature, where users can submit questions. Her general motivations of creating communication channels is to subside growing fears students have regarding E&H’s fate. The college’s SGA has been deprived of maximum democratic functionality due to lacking the student run judicial board to hear cases regarding conduct code violations. Maness also hopes to find students to fill the vacancies of adjudicating students. Maness is proud to be leading the current administration due to its commitment to efficiency of action and believes the body is capable of continuing its excellent behavior. “They have done a fantastic job creating respectful and thoughtful bills,” said Maness. However, Maness is concerned by the lack of transparency of administrators because she believes without necessary information, “We can’t move forward.” However Greek Council, the body governing greek life on campus, has room to improve in regarding to divulging important information, according to Maness. Without proper information the SGA is prevented from doing its job of evaluating greek council’s decisions. To solve this she is working with Jared Brasero, president of the council.
