Kanin Clark, Arts & Life Editor EMORY, Va—Some of the joys of fall are pumpkin patches, flannel, corn mazes, and being scared to death. Well, the latter is not for the faint of heart, but for those who thrive on the adrenaline rush of being herded through enclosed areas and the occasional jumpscare. But for those who are easily spooked or do not prefer to be frightened, Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia offers many pumpkin patches and corn mazes for a relaxed, fun evening with friends.

Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer Local, handcrafted doughnuts from Little Downtown Doughnuts in Abingdon are joining my list of the best doughnuts in the country, alongside Tatonut in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai in Portland, Oregon, Donut Bar in Las Vegas, and the salt and vinegar Sublime Donut in Atlanta. (Yep, it’s that serious.)
Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer The days when sequels were churned out to capitalize on a successful first film are banished (hopefully) forever. Sequels are becoming a way to raise standards and authentically expand the world audiences loved in the original. “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is set to be the queen of the follow-up, joining classics like “ The Godfather Part II” and “The Empire Strikes Back” in the debate of whether a sequel is better than its predecessor.
Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer It was the first time watching La casa del fin de los tiempos when I caught myself thinking, “Please don’t let it turn out to be a portal to hell in the basement.” (Spoiler alert: there was no portal to hell under the subflooring of the house at the end of time.) But I realized, maybe I was too familiar with American movie plot-devices for thrillers to be--well--thrilling any more. Since then, I learned a lot of my favorite movies with a ghostly or gory twist come from South America or Spain.
Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer It might seem fall break would give us all time to cook from scratch, but sometimes, a break is just when you want to cut corners and enjoy all your free moments. Better yet, when you cook big portions, you can save more time by trading dinner invitation with friends, or packing no-fuss meals to reheat later in the week. Here are two (and a half) time-saving, delicious recipes with ingredients you can buy in bulk at Sam’s Club.
Jacob Cordle, Arts & Life Writer EMORY, Va.—I was graciously given the opportunity to view the Emory & Henry Theatre Department’s version of The 39 Steps directed by senior Abigail Bell days before the official presentations of the show. This allowed me to view the play and experience the beauty of theatre from an inside perspective.
Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer When a chill hits the air, along with sweatshirts and pumpkin-flavored-everything, I look forward to queuing good spooky movies—especially if they feature those glamorously dressed, platelet-sipping, stars of the night-life: vampires. Many of my favorites never got the press that Twilight did, but luckily, they won’t burn to ash if we shed a little light on them now.
Amy Lemco, Arts & Life Writer It’s important to find those recipes you can eat portion after portion of. Unlike fast food that makes me feel icky like I never satisfied my hunger, meals like this are filling and regret-free.
